Hollywood`S Faith In The Power Of 3D Movies

Hollywood`s faith in the power of 3D movies to deliver a bright future of packed cinemas and spectacle-wearing audiences has been jolted by the box ofifce figures that show the high-tech format may already be floundering.

Seven months ago James Cameron`s science fiction epic "Avatar" burst onto the screen in three dimensions, taking in $2.7 billion and becoming the highest grossing film of all time.

Studio executives in America compared the breakthrough to the development of first "talkies" almost a century ago, and fell over one another in the stampede to produce more such films.

But now, with the tally of major films released in the new format expected to reach 22 by the end of the year - with up to $7.50 extra being charged per ticket - there are signs that 3D may not after all be the panacea for falling ticket sales.

The proportion of cinema goers who opt to see new films in their 3D versions has fallen steadily over recent months, with more opting instead to watch them in the traditional and cheaper formats.

When "Avatar" came out in December, 71 percent of Americans who went to see it on the opening weekend - often the peak moment for a new release - opted for a cinema showing the 3D version.

In March, when the animated fantasy "How to Train Your Dragon" was released, 68 percent of the audience chose to see the film that way.

But by May that figure for "Shrek Forever After" was down to 61 percent. At the beginning of this month only 56 percent saw "The Last Airbender" in 3D, and a week later the proportion fell even lower, to 45 percent, for the newly-released animation "Despicable Me".

The figures have provoked an anxious debate in the industry, which had previously hatched plans to convert popular films on its backlist - everything from the "Star Wars" trilogy, to "Harry Potter", to the college pranks of Jackass - into the cinematic style du jour.

Studios are working on at least 24 brand new films in the expensive format for release next year. Now some fear that the "3D bubble" has already burst.

Critics say part of the problem may be the technology itself. While "Avatar" was specifically made in the new format, studios have hurriedly converted films that were originally made for two dimensions.

The process can cost up to $100,000 per minute of film but can be done in a matter of weeks, allowing for a quick release. However, a lot of the time it simply doesn`t work and delivers murky pictures.

After seeing director M. Night Shyamalan`s summer blockbuster "The Last Airbender", starring British actor Dev Patel, American film critic Roger Ebert said it "looked like it was filmed with a dirty sheet over the lens".

He said Hollywood`s current infatuation with 3D was just an excuse to add surcharges to already expensive cinema tickets.

"Clash of the Titans", which was also converted and released in April, received similar criticism and was accused of actually putting audiences off the new visual effects.

Hollywood mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg, who was not involved with the film, called it a "cheeseball conversion" and suggested it was helping to "kill that goose that is delivering us golden eggs".

He said: "We`re still at the beginning of this and not all 3D is equal, and consumers are beginning to realise this. There have been lesser 3D movies released and there`s already been a backlash against it."

Christopher Nolan, the British-born director of "The Dark Knight" and "Inception", refused to use the new technology in his latest film because he found the dimness "extremely alienating".

But die-hard cheerleaders in Hollywood suggest the apparent migration of audiences back to traditional flat images is illusory.

While "Avatar" faced no competition when it came out there is now a flood of 3D releases and not enough screens equipped to show them. So far only about 5,000 screens in the US have been converted and 35,000 have not.

Studio insiders also point to the fact that only 28 percent of the cinemas showing "Clash of the Titans" on its opening weekend were 3D, yet accounted for 52 percent of its revenues.

They argue the proportion of tickets sold also depends on the subject matter of the film. The fantasy adventure "Alice In Wonderland", starring Johnny Depp, had the sixth biggest opening weekend of all time in March, grossing $116 million two thirds of which came from 3D screenings.

However, some of those who know the film industry best are convinced the latest trend will go the same way as the 3D fads of the 1950s and 1980s.

"3D is a waste of a perfectly good dimension and Hollywood`s current crazy stampede toward it is suicidal," said Ebert. "It adds nothing essential to the movie-going experience. For some, it is an annoying distraction. For others, it creates nausea and headaches."

Tiger Woods Is Still The World`s Highest Earning Athlete

Professional golfer Tiger Woods has been off his game since his extramarital affairs were exposed last year, but he is still the world`s highest earning athlete, according to two lists released on Wednesday.

Woods claimed the top spot on a 2010 U.S. list of 50 athletes for the seventh consecutive year compiled by Sports Illustrated`s SI.com, though his total earnings fell 10 percent to $90.5 million. His total is also down 40 percent from $127.9 million in 2008.

Woods also topped Forbes magazine`s 2010 list of the top 50 earning athletes in the world at $105 million, down 4.5 percent from last year as the star golfer has lost such sponsors as Accenture Plc and AT&T Inc. It was the ninth consecutive year he topped the Forbes list.

Overall, the average earnings for the entire U.S. list at SI.com rose 11 percent to a record $26.2 million, and were up 1.7 percent to $30 million for 20 international stars.

Tennis star Roger Federer, at $61.8 million, bumped soccer player David Beckham from the top spot he had held the last two years on the international list, SI.com said.

Woods` earnings for the 2010 list are comprised of $20.5 million in earnings and $70 million in endorsements from such sponsors as Nike Inc and Electronic Arts Inc, SI.com said. Woods` endorsement earnings fell $22 million from last year`s list.

Woods` personal life took center stage for fans after a car accident outside his Florida home last November brought to light extramarital affairs and led him to make a public apology. He has played several tournaments since his April return from a self-imposed, five-month exile but has yet to win.

Rival golfer Phil Mickelson came in second on the 2010 U.S. list at $61.7 million, and the top 10 included four players from the National Basketball Association, led by LeBron James at No. 4 ($45.8 million), SI.com said.

The top 10 also included boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr (No. 3 at $60.3 million), two Major League Baseball stars, including Alex Rodriguez at No. 5 ($37 million), and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning of the National Football League (No. 9 at $30.8 million), SI.com said.

On the international list, Federer jumped from No. 9 last year as his earnings doubled, while Beckham slipped to No. 3 at $40.5 million behind FIFA world soccer player of the year Lionel Messi at $44 million, according to SI.com.

Rounding out the international top five were soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo ($40 million) and boxer Manny Pacquiao ($38 million), SI.com said.

Basketball player Allen Iverson, No. 8 on last year`s U.S. list, dropped entirely out of the top 50, SI.com said. Tennis player Maria Sharapova was the only female athlete to make either list, ranking No. 20 on the international list at $19.9 million.

Rounding out Forbes` top five were boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr ($65 million), NBA star Kobe Bryant ($48 million), Mickelson ($46 million) and Beckham ($43.7 million). Federer ($43 million), James ($42.8 million) and Pacquiao ($42 million) were next on the list, which previously ranked the top 20.

George Clooney Will Receive A Special Emmy Award

Actor George Clooney, who led a galaxy of stars in a January telethon fundraiser for Haiti`s earthquake victims, will receive a special Emmy Award for his humanitarian efforts on August 29.

The 49-year-old Hollywood heartthrob will be honored for hosting the "Hope for Haiti Now" television special, as well as his efforts to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina and raise awareness of the crisis in Darfur.

"George was an obvious choice for this honor," said John Shaffner, chairman and CEO of the Television Academy.

"He has understood and harnessed the power of television, the most powerful medium of our time, to reach into the hearts of people around the world and compelled us to action on behalf of those in sudden and desperate need, as well as those tragically oppressed in Darfur."

The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award was established in 2002 and Clooney will be its fourth recipient.

Clooney, who is also a producer, screenwriter and Oscar-winning director, has joined other humanitarian campaigns, such as when he backed then-British prime minister Gordon Brown in calling for the release of Burma`s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

"Like my own father, George is a person who looks beyond himself to use his celebrity for good, to make a difference in the world and to inspire others to do the same," said Hope`s daughter, Linda.

"It`s particularly gratifying that he has been selected for this award, since our families have a history of friendship and a powerful, shared desire to help others."

Previous recipients of the awards were Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby and Danny Thomas, who received it posthumously in 2004.

A Long Lost Charlie Chaplin Movie Discovered

A long lost Hollywood silent movie starring a young Charlie Chaplin has been discovered at an antiques fair.

The 1914 film with a cameo appearance by Chaplin is now being shown at a film festival in the US state of Virginia for the first time.

The film ‘A Thief Catcher’ is a 10-minute comedy, which was discovered last autumn by film historian and preservationist Paul Gierucki.

It was found in an antique trunk and bought for around 65 pounds.

"I opened the can, unspooled it and I immediately recognized the title as an early Keystone," Sky News quoted him as saying.

"So I bartered with the guy, bought the film, brought it home. It needed some repair.

"So I put it on a shelf and it sat there since November of last year. I was busy working on another project. I kind of forgot about it," he added.

‘A Thief Catcher’ was filmed between January 5 and January 26, 1914, and released on February 14 the same year.

It stars Ford Sterling, Mac Swain, Edgar Kennedy and features Chaplin making a three-minute cameo as a policeman in the film.

The tools were saved by a senior embalmer at the Memphis Funeral Home, which prepared Presley`s body after his death in August 1977.

She always listens and gives good advice regardless of her own interests” revealed Pattinson about girlfriend Kristen.

Dev too spoke on the same lines saying, “Nothing much has changed post Slumdog. I do still live at my home. My old bedroom is still there and maybe that’s a big part of it, I go home and it’s just the same as it always was. I am simple and so is Freida. It’s great to be with someone who understands what I do.

She’s not only a great girlfriend but she’s also a great friend and a great support in what I do. I love watching movies, so does she. And the thing is I’m quite boring that way but I love just spending time with my friends at their house.”

As far as fame is concerned, Dev revealed, “I wish I could go down to the local bowling alley and have some fun there but now there is a lot more attention on me but in that way I have to be a bit more reclusive and a bit more careful about where I go in public. Only four songs debuted on the Hot 100 and none higher than No. 92 where first-time entrant The Band Perry scored with its top 30 Country Songs hit, ‘If I Die Happy.’ The other debuts were: Fantasia`s ‘Bittersweet’ (No. 94), ‘B.M.F. For starters, the film is nothing short of an adventurous thrilling ride. Right from the first sequence to the climax, the movie is filled with oddball instances that keep you at the edge of your seat. As per the storyline, the movie has June (played by Cameron Diaz), who is callous and carefree.

The one thing she desperately wants to do right is attend her sister’s wedding and be on time for the dress rehearsals. But as fate would have it, June boards the wrong flight to Boston which also happens to have CIA operative Roy Miller (played by Tom Cruise) on board.

Here on begins their wild journey that takes them to some of the most romantic locales of the world. But romance isn’t all this one promises, there are endless car chase sequences, gun shots firings and cheesy acts. However, the two superstars pull off all the stunts with √©lan.

As for the chemistry, the two leave you craving for more. While Tom plays the perfect Knight, Diaz makes up for the damsel who is always attracting trouble and in constant need to be rescued - a job Tom thoroughly enjoys.

So while the plotline might offer nothing new, the screenplay is definitely worth a watch.
The film is a sure shot entertainer and has comic, romantic and death defying sequences in plenty. An over the top adrenalin rush guaranteed, this one is worth it’s weight.

Rating: 3 cheers for ‘Knight and Day’.

People Didn`T Expect Me In Comedies -Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone regrets making `Rocky V`, saying he only revived the boxing franchise because he was "greedy".

The actor shot to international fame playing small-time boxer Rocky Balboa in the Oscar-winning 1976 movie "Rocky", and he extended his success by writing and starring in a series of sequels, which have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.

However, he regards the 1990`s flop sequel of the film as his worst Hollywood franchise.

"I`m greedy - what can I tell you? It was a mistake because the audience didn`t want to see the downside of the character. They wanted him to remain on top. I should have known that. I fell into a sense of self-parody," he said.

Contactmusic reports that the 64-year-old is also embarrassed by his forays into more light-hearted films.

"People didn`t expect me in comedies or musicals. I made some truly awful movies. `Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot` was the worst. If you ever want someone to confess to murder, just make him or her sit through that film. They will confess to anything after 15 minutes!" he added.

I Can Reinvent Myself Here-Dev Patel

After playing a kind-hearted boy in the Oscar winning movie `Slumdog Millionaire`, India-born actor Dev Patel wants to "reinvent" himself by doing negative roles.

The young actor was recently seen as Prince Zuko in M. Night Shyamalan`s `The Last Airbender`, which released in the US last week.

"I got offered a lot of things after `Slumdog Millionaire`, but this really stood out, because it was a villain. I wanted to go as far as possible in the other direction.

I think I can reinvent myself here," Patel was quoted as saying.

Patel first received fame in the British TV show "Skins".

The Expendables Axed In Order To Secure The Film`S UK Release

An extremely violent scene in Sylvester Stallone’s new blockbuster ‘The Expendables’ has been axed by the movie bosses in order to secure the film`s UK release.

Due to the gory scenes and use of strong language in the flick, executives at the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) gave movie an adults-only 18 certification, reports the Daily Star.

The producers, therefore, chose to remove a harrowing shot, which showed "a hero sadistically twisting a knife" into a man`s neck, to ensure that the film was granted a less severe 15-age rating, according to Bleedingcool.

However, US audiences can see that footage, as the film has been given an R-rating there.

Vice President Joe Biden Is Headed To Jay Leno`s Stage

Vice President Joe Biden is headed to Jay Leno`s stage. The Friday appearance will be Biden`s first stop on NBC`s ‘The Tonight Show’ since he took office in January 2009. He was a guest in 2007, and stopped in after he accepted the Democratic vice presidential nomination in 2008.

President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and White House senior adviser David Axelrod also have made appearances on the late-night show.

Biden`s visit could signal that he doesn`t hold grudges.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Leno joked that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin was going off script and making embarrassing statements so often that "her Secret Service code name is now Joe Biden."

Angelina Jolie Flashed Her New Tattoos

Angelina Jolie has added two new swirl tattoos to an old Roman numeral tattoo on her left arm.

Jolie flashed her new tattoos at the premiere of `Salt` in Cancun, Mexico.

The 35-year-old actress had the Roman number 13 inked because she doesn`t believe in superstition, reports told.

She later added V MCMXL to the end of it to signify the date of Winston Churchill`s famous speech on May 13, 1940 in which he said: "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat."

Though swirl tattoos can have a variety of meanings, Jolie`s could be a Tibetan "heading" swirl, which acts to accentuate the importance of a character.

The fact that it sits over both halves of the Roman numeral tattoo could mean the actress simply wants to underscore its meaning.

Jennifer Lopez Admits Her Relationship With Ben Affleck

Pop star and actress Jennifer Lopez admits her relationship with actor Ben Affleck completely changed her, while her romance with rap superstar P Diddy was "ugly" and "sordid".

The 40-year-old star whose engagement to Affleck ended hours before they were supposed to wed in September 2003 was left heartbroken by their split and ended up "not quite the same person" she was before they started dating, reported.

"I don`t think I had ever been heartbroken in that way before - had so many hopes and dreams on something. This was the first time and it was tough. When you go through that kind of heartbreak in front of everybody you are not quite the same person you were before," Lopez says in her `Behind The Music` documentary for VH1.

Before Affleck, Lopez dated rapper P Diddy and the she describes the two-and-a-half year relationship Jennifer now describes as "ugly" and "sordid".

"He was like, `I love you`. Right away. It was very fast, but we did have a connection. We did fall in love and we were very close. But my relationship with him was always something I knew would end.

It started out as something very pure and innocent. But it did get ugly - it did get sordid," Lopez said. After dating the rapper, she had a brief marriage to backing dancer Cris Judd from September 2001 until they separated in June the next year, when she started dating

Despite her dramatic past relationships, Lopez is now settled with her long-term friend, singer Marc Anthony, who she briefly dated in the 90s and has two-year-old twins Max and Emme with.

They recorded a track together for Lopez`s film `Shall We Dance` in early 2004, and following a whirlwind romance, they wed on June 5 that year. "We make each other better. We reconnected like we had
never been apart. It was really the same chemistry and connection we had at the very beginning," Lopez said.

"I couldn`t be more in love. I say it every day - I`m the luckiest man on earth," Anthony said.

Independence Day Voted Americas Favourite Fourth Of July Movie

American actor Will Smith’s struggle to save the world from aliens in the 1996 hit ‘Independence Day’ has been voted America`s favourite Fourth of July movie moment in an online poll.

Smith played a fighter pilot who flew a fearless mission to plant a nuclear bomb on a hostile spaceship.

49 per cent of moviegoers voted the scene as their favourite, reports the Daily Express.

Sylvester Stallone’s battle with brawler Apollo Creed in the first ‘Rocky’ movie won the second place.

And it was followed by the prison camp Fourth of July party scene from 1963 Steve McQueen-starring classic ‘The Great Escape.’

Night Shyamalan Not Teamup With Bradley Cooper

Indian-American filmmaker M Night Shyamalan says the possibility of Bradley Cooper joining his upcoming supernatural thriller is dim because the Hollywood actor will be busy with the sequel to `Hangover`.

Shyamalan, known for his thrillers like `Sixth Sense` and `The Village`, is preparing for a new project after the release of his latest film `The Last Airbender`, which stars `Slumdog Millionaire` star Dev Patel, Ace Showbiz reported.

While it was previously said to see the collaboration of at least three A-list stars, Shyamalan claims it is likely that Cooper might not star in it as expected.

"`Hangover 2`, I don`t think Bradley can do it because of that," Shyamalan said.

The 35-year-old actor is attached to reprise his role in `The Hangover` sequel, which is likely to be shot as early as November this year.

On why he wants Cooper, Bruce Willis and Gwyneth Paltrow for the project, Shyamalan said, "Bradley is a Philly boy, we see each other a lot, and we`ve become friends, and obviously I`ve worked with Bruce a lot. But Gwyneth, she`s just a great actress, that`s why I`d be interested."

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Opened With $68.5 Million

`The Twilight Saga: Eclipse` is waning at the box office but still has gotten off to a blockbuster start with $161 million in its first five days, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The third chapter in Summit Entertainment`s vampire romance fell off sharply after debuting last Wednesday with $68.5 million. That was the second-best opening-day haul ever, behind its predecessor, last year`s "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which opened with $72.7 million.

After that huge first day, "Eclipse" averaged about $23 million daily over the next four days. That includes an estimate for a slow Sunday as people turned their attention to Fourth of July activities.

"Weather has a lot to do with a Fourth of July opening. I`m not looking to make excuses, but between barbecues and fireworks, we have a lot of competition," said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Summit. "I do think people will come back to the movie."

Its total through Sunday came in well short of the $200 million mark set last year by "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," the record-holder for best five-day start for movies opening on Wednesday.

"Eclipse" easily held the No. 1 spot for the weekend, though its $69 million Friday-to-Sunday total was only a fraction more than what the movie took in just on opening day. "New Moon" took in $142.8 million in its first weekend last November, though the movie opened on Friday and the figure includes its record opening-day gross.

Summit estimates "Eclipse" will climb to around $181 million domestically by Monday. The movie also has added $100.2 million in 42 overseas markets.

"Eclipse" has found a wider fan base than "New Moon," with a bigger percentage of males turning out for the latest installment. Female fans accounted for 80 percent of the audience on "New Moon" but only 65 percent of crowds for "Eclipse," Summit reported.

The latest adaptation of Stephenie Meyer`s best-selling novels, "Eclipse" continues the love triangle involving a broody teen (Kristen Stewart), her vampire sweetheart (Robert Pattinson) and her werewolf pal (Taylor Lautner).

The weekend`s other new wide release, Paramount`s "The Last Airbender," opened well with $40.7 million to finish at No. 2 for the three-day weekend. The movie took in $53.2 million since debuting Thursday.

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan ("The Sixth Sense"), "The Last Airbender" is based on the cartoon series about a youth with mythical powers who can unite four warring nations.

"The Last Airbender" found a solid audience despite dreadful reviews from critics, who found the plot muddled and the dialogue stilted.

Disney`s animated smash "Toy Story 3," which had been No. 1 the previous two weekends, slipped to third-place with $30.2 million, raising its total to $289 million.

"Toy Story 3" is about to pass last year`s "Up" at $293 million to become No. 2 on the chart of Pixar Animation`s blockbusters. The Disney unit`s top-grossing film is "Finding Nemo" at $339.7 million.

Hollywood`s overall business rose, helping to shore up this summer`s sliding box office. Total revenues came in at about $193 million from Friday to Sunday, up 19 percent from the Fourth of July weekend last year, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Revenues this season are running at $2.16 billion, down a fraction from summer 2009. Factoring in higher ticket prices, though, movie attendance this summer is down 6.7 percent, according to Hollywood.com.

Lindsay Lohan Was Attacked By A Waitress

Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan, who turned 24 Friday, claims she was attacked by a waitress while she was enjoying a night out at a restaurant.

Lohan claims she was attacked "for no reason", reports contactmusic.

"A waitress just hit me - punched me for no reason," Lohan posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

However, Lohan had no wild plans for her birthday owing to an alcohol-monitoring bracelet that she has to wear as part of her probation for driving under the influence of alcohol.

"I mean there`s not much you can do with a monitoring bracelet and no money," one of Lohan`s friends was quoted as saying.

She is due to appear in court Tuesday, where it shall be determined how well she is adhering to the court-imposed restrictions.

Dev Patel's The Last Airbender In Indian Screens

`Slumdog Millionaire` star Dev Patel is returning as a prince in Indian-American director M Night Shyamalan`s fantasy-adventure `The Last Airbender`, which hits Indian screens on July 9.

Based on the animated TV series `Avatar: The Last Airbender`, the film has been produced by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. The film will be released in 3D and 2D format simultaneously, a statement from the producers said.

Patel, who rose to global stardom with his portrayal of underdog `Jamaal` in Danny Boyle`s multiple-Oscar-winning film, plays the character of Prince Zuko, a 16-year-old Fire Nation prince in the movie, which also stars Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Shaun Toub, Aasif Mandvi and Cliff Curtis.

The film is about four nations --Air, Water, Earth, Fire. They are tied together by destiny but things take a bad turn when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others.

A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara (Nicola Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), to restore balance to their war-torn world.

James Cameron To Make A Documentary With Black Eyed Peas

Pop band Black Eyed Peas has teamed up with `Avatar` director James Cameron to make a documentary on the band.

"We have the biggest director (Cameron), because we are the biggest group on the planet, based around (the Peas`) tour activities.

We have toured across the globe from America and Europe, to the Middle East, South America, Asia and Africa," guardian quoted band member Will.i.am as saying.

However, it`s unclear whether they will be shooting the documentary in 3D or converting the film later. But if the Black Eyed Peas have truly roped in Cameron, they have perhaps the best 3D jockey in the business.

Maria Sharapova's Tennis Court Dresses Available For Public

Tennis ace Maria Sharapova has revealed that she helps in designing the outfits she wears on the tennis court and now those are available for the public.

"The things that I wear on court are actually available for people to buy. I`ve got a chance to help design the dresses and the two piece outfits and that`s been really fun, because it`s something that`s really creative.

I`ve been interested in it since I was pretty young," femalefirst quoted Sharapova as saying.

The 23-year-old admits that creating outfits for other people was a challenge for her.

"When the dresses were just made for me, we could do things that were a little bit more extreme and work with different materials.

Now it`s for people to buy, it`s from a little bit of a different perspective because you`re making clothes for the public and not just yourself, which is a different process but it`s just as fun," she said.
